Wednesday, March 31, 2010 17:16 GMT

LONDON (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – It’s about time the 316-foot clock tower known as “Big Ben” was declared Britain’s best landmark.

The giant clock, whose loud bell is heard by millions of tourists each year, has been voted the most beloved landmark across the pond in a survey by Beautiful Britain magazine.

Editors consider Big Ben to be a globally recognized cultural symbol that immediately makes people think of London or England.

Other hotspots include...

  • Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument built between 3000 B.C. and 2000 B.C.

  • The legendary White Cliffs Of Dover, immortalized in several songs.

  • Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, which sits atop a huge volcanic rock.

St. Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, The Roman Baths, and London Bridge also made the cut of top attractions.

According to the mag, 80 percent of Brits think their country is beautiful as a whole, with 68 percent wanting to see more red tape and efforts to preserve their beloved monuments.
