Freezing Plunge Turns Men Into Girls

Wednesday, February 3, 2010 17:30 GMT

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A dip in freezing cold water can turn even the most macho man into a whimpering little girl.

This Saturday (Feb. 6) is the 18th Annual Polar Plunge in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where 3,200 brave souls will jump into the Atlantic Ocean simultaneously to raise money for Special Olympics.

With the water at a chilly 38 to 42 degrees, event organizer Debbie Apperson anticipates major shrieking once bodies hit the water – especially from big, burly dudes.

Still, even if guys scream like girls, they’ll be considered superheroes for taking the charity plunge.

Apperson admits there isn’t much participants can do to stay warm during the dive, but suggests they wear shoes in the water because the sand below feels as cold as ice.

They can also go in and out quickly or just dip their toes.

After the plunge, most divers can be found drinking hot coffee, snuggling up in blankets, or hitting the hot tub at a nearby hotel.
