In fact, drag was just something RuPaul got dragged into by his buddies back in the ’80s, when he joined a rock ’n’ roll band.
RuPaul says his band would play shows in New York dressed in drag to “shock audiences,” and the response to his cross-dressing was overwhelming.
He explains, “The crowds were wowed and took interest to me as a queen. I discovered that it was my unique talent.”
Though it wasn’t exactly the career path he assumed he’d take, RuPaul says that success is about finding your niche and “working it.”
That’s what he teaches contestants on his reality show, RuPaul’s Drag Race, which airs on Logo.
RuPaul hopes to find the next drag superstar to fill his high heels, but it won’t be easy.
To truly make it in the drag queen biz, he says “tenacity” is key, as well as style, pizzazz, and, of course, killer lip-synching skills.
