The Estria Invitational Graffiti Battle is coming to the 1:AM SF Gallery in San Francisco on Saturday (Oct. 10), where 24 of the best street graffiti artists will create an original piece in one hour that depicts a word – given to them moments before the competition – and an illustration.
Spokesperson Anna Lopez likens the event to the cooking show Iron Chef, since they “get the ingredients right then and there and have to create something amazing out of them.”
Contestants really feel the heat during the battle, trying to finish on time and impress their peers because the street cred that comes from winning is the biggest prize.
Lopez says, “They’ll be all cocky at first but when time starts winding down they’ll be sweating like crazy because if they don’t finish we don’t allocate them. So there’s no time for smack talk.”
