Old-Time Piano Music On Kids’ Playlists?

DECATUR, Ill. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Forget the Jonas Brothers, kids want to rock out to some old-time Scott Joplin instead.

At least that’s the case at the 35th Annual World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest in Decatur, Illinois, this weekend (May 23-25), where kids and adults will play their best old-school piano music while decked out in old-timey suits, vests, and flapper dresses.

According to event coordinator Judy Leschewski, kids really get into the old-time music, since it’s so upbeat and fun to dance to.

She believes it’s better than any rap music out there, and kids often reveal that old Joplin favorites like “Maple Leaf Rag” re-ignite their passion for piano playing.

Last year’s winner was 17 – the youngest piano prodigy to take home the special traveling trophy – proving that even teens are keen on old-time music.

To win the contest, Leschewski says it’s essential to practice and build stamina to bust out the fast ditties accurately.
