Punners Are Verbal Terrorists

AUSTIN, Texas (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Too much punning can be considered a weapon of verbal destruction.

The 32 Annual O. Henry Pun-Off World Championships are coming to Austin, Texas, tomorrow (May 16), where pro punners will compete in various games of wordplay.

Producer Gary Hallock says participants train hard learning puns for different topics, like farming or outer space, so they can be quick on their feet during head-to-head pun-offs.

Though being a clever wordsman is celebrated at the competition, Hallock admits the talent for punning ruins any social situation.

He says, “I’m a verbal terrorist. I literally put a car bomb of language to derail any kind of conversation. Punning is a lifestyle. You live and breathe it, and because you do it alienates you.”

Hallock admits punning is “not acceptable in excess,” but at the championships punners “exploit” that it’s revered there and run puns into the ground.
