Thats because back on October 5, 1892, the Dalton Gang which included brothers Grat, Bob, and Emmett tried to rob banks in the town in broad daylight.
Four townspeople, two of the brothers, and two accomplices were killed in a shootout that followed a robbery.
To celebrate the outlaws demise, the small town holds a reenactment of that fateful day every first weekend in October dubbed, Dalton Defenders Days.
Shootout spokeswoman Angela Wilson says its a fun way to honor the pride the people of Coffeyville once had in their town.
She says, Its very important to remember this day because of the sacrifice that the defenders gave. Four families were left without their loved ones and the town lost four citizens. We should never forget that sacrifice.
Dalton Defenders Days will be held Friday (Oct. 3) through Saturday (Oct. 4).
