Texas Festival Celebrates Big Melons

LULING, Texas (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – They like their melons big in Texas.

The 55th Annual Watermelon Thump is rolling into Luling, Texas, on June 26-29, and everyone’s hoping to get their hands on some big, juicy melons.

Spokesperson Jamie Nickells explains, “The highlight of the festival is the melon judging. We try to find the biggest and best melon in the area. They’ll weigh up to 80 pounds. It creates a lot of excitement.”

The festival also has attendees rubbing their faces in some big melons for the watermelon eating contest, which Nickells says gets “messy and wild” since participants have to eat every bit, even off the floor and table.

There’s also a seed spitting competition that has spitters stepping up to beat the record of more than 68 feet, and landing the title is easier with a crowd.

Nickells says, “We make sure everyone has a cheering section. They’ll sing ‘Ode to the Melon’ and yell out, ‘Take that seed and blow.’”
