Trashy TV Is Not Totally Terrible

ATLANTA (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Reality shows aren’t all that bad, as long as there’s a good story behind them.

That’s the story from Jeffrey Stepakoff, author of Billion-Dollar Kiss: The Kiss That Saved Dawson’s Creek and Other Adventures in TV Writing (Gotham), which explores the intense, behind-the-scenes world of TV writing.

Stepakoff – who’s written for 14 shows, including The Wonder Years and Dawson’s Creek – says while he prefers quality scripted shows, reality TV isn’t turning the tube into total trash.

He explains, “American Idol is great, but do we really need bikini-clad models hanging upside down from helicopters eating horse feces? And I don’t understand Dancing With The Stars, but at least they’re wearing clothes.”

Stepakoff isn’t scared of a reality takeover, and says story-driven shows like Everybody Hates Chris and Curb Your Enthusiasm are a good balance from trashy reality TV.

He says, “It gets convoluted, but at the end of the day, it’s all about good storytelling.”

Billion-Dollar Kiss comes out May 1.
