Thats the story from Jeffrey Stepakoff, author of Billion-Dollar Kiss: The Kiss That Saved Dawsons Creek and Other Adventures in TV Writing (Gotham), which explores the intense, behind-the-scenes world of TV writing.
Stepakoff whos written for 14 shows, including The Wonder Years and Dawsons Creek says while he prefers quality scripted shows, reality TV isnt turning the tube into total trash.
He explains, American Idol is great, but do we really need bikini-clad models hanging upside down from helicopters eating horse feces? And I dont understand Dancing With The Stars, but at least theyre wearing clothes.
Stepakoff isnt scared of a reality takeover, and says story-driven shows like Everybody Hates Chris and Curb Your Enthusiasm are a good balance from trashy reality TV.
He says, It gets convoluted, but at the end of the day, its all about good storytelling.
Billion-Dollar Kiss comes out May 1.
