Ostrich Festival An Unfriendly Affair

CHANDLER, Ariz. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One feathery festival is bringing unfriendly birds to the track and grill.

The 20th Annual Ostrich Festival is heading to Chandler, Arizona, this weekend (Mar. 7-9), but people will have to be careful with the flightless, fighting birds.

According to festival spokesperson Katie Stringham, the ostriches at the festival are kept at a fair distance from the festival attendees because they are “very ornery, strong birds that can kill a lion with one kick.”

Even ostrich racers have to beware of getting their heads buried in the sand by the angry animals.

Stringham explains, “We have ostrich races, but only pros can ride them. Getting on an ostrich is not like getting on a horse. They’re tough to ride. The goal is just to stay on them.”

The closest most get to an unfriendly ostrich is by feasting on an ostrich burger, which Stringham says is “not much different than eating a regular burger.”
