Dan Koeppel is the author of Banana: The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World (Hudson Street), and he says theres a fungus thats been sweeping across the globe killing off the yellow fruit, and if we arent careful, well soon be kissing our banana bread goodbye.
According to Koeppel, the fungus has been banishing bananas in parts of Africa, and extreme measures should be taken to protect the beloved fruit.
Koeppel believes the only way to save our precious plantains is to use genetic engineering to make a better banana.
And for Koeppel, keeping the banana in business should be a worldwide concern.
Koeppel says, Look at the global impact bananas have. Uganda is stable because of bananas, and violence has stopped because people have something to eat. Its one of the most important foods globally.
Banana is on shelves now.
