National Yo-Yo Contest Gets Folks Spinning

CHICO, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Handy folks are polishing their “rock the baby” yo-yo moves in hopes of being crowned the yo-yo master of the United States.

The 14th Annual National Yo-Yo Contest spins into Chico, California, on October 5-6, and yo-yo junkies won’t be toying around for a win.

According to contest director Thad Winzenz, classic yo-yo tricks like “around the world” and “walk the dog” won’t cut it in this competition.

He says, “We’re looking for new moves, innovations never seen before, and perfect technical execution. And how flashy you are while doing them.”

Competitors will need to practice hard to string along tough judges, and Winzenz says high-performance spinners like ball- bearing yo-yos – which can go for up to $100 – are “the gold standard” for competition.

And it’s really down to the man behind the toy, and his equipment.

Says Winzenz: “Good equipment makes a difference. But it’s more about the player and a little less about the equipment.”
