Tug-O-War Over Mighty Mississippi Is A Battle For State Bragging Rights

LECLAIRE, Iowa (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – When it comes to a good tugging match, nowhere does it like the Midwest.

Port Byron, Illinois, residents are heaving with anticipation as they prepare to battle folks from LeClaire, Iowa, in The 21st Annual Great River Tug Fest, an all-out tug-o-war across the mighty Mississippi River on Saturday, August 11th.

The Tug Fest hauls onto the state line between Illinois and Iowa, as 11 teams of 20 people pull on a 2,400-foot rope from each side of the Mississippi.

According to Media Chairman Tammy Mumma, this year’s competition is serious business.

She says: “There was never a rivalry between the towns before, but there definitely is now. It’s a big deal.”

Along with a years worth of bragging rights, the winning town pulls away with the coveted Alabaster Eagle trophy to show off their tugging supremacy.
