Will New Hawaiian Cocktail Overtake Mai Tai?

HONOLULU, Hawaii (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Most people associate cocktails like the Mai Tai or Pina Colada with Hawaii, but some booze buffs are hoping to make a big splash on the mainland with something called a “Slack Key Star.”

The Slack Key Star is a beverage concocted by bartender Bob Melton as part of the beverage contest sponsored by the Outrigger hotel chain.

Drinkmeisters were asked to create a drink inspired by Hawaiian music and Melton came up with the Slack Key Star to honor “slack key guitar,” a style of picking that uses unconventional tunings.

The drink itself is unconventional too, combining raspberry vodka, passionfruit liqueur and sour apple schnapps with pineapple juice, orange-mango juice and star fruit in a glass featuring li hing powder, a sweetish-sour powder used to pickle plums.

Insiders who’ve tried the drink admit it left them slack- jawed.

No one knows if the Slack Key Star will rival the Mai Tai, Pina Colada or Margarita as the next big fruity drink, but the real test will come on Friday (Feb. 9), when Melton debuts the drink on the mainland in Los Angeles at a party for all the musicians nominated for the Hawaiian music Grammy.
