Actress Goes Through ‘Cultural Boot Camp’ To Learn Telenovela Spanish

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Telenovelas are becoming increasingly popular in American television markets, thanks in large part to “crossover” actresses like Mexican-born, American-raised Katie Barberi.

Barberi says she was asked to star in the upcoming Ugly Betty telenovela series by a casting director on the basis of her crossover hit movie Not Quite Human 2.

In Barberi’s words: “It turns out that was a huge hit in Mexico – and they told me if I signed with them, they would teach me to speak Spanish fluently, which was news to me because I thought I already did.”

Barbari adds that the subsequent classes and working on the show ended up being “a cultural, linguistic and acting boot camp” for her.

In her words: “The Spanish I did speak turned out to only be about 60 to 70 percent of what I needed.”

The American version of Ugly Betty airs Thursdays on ABC. Barberi returns to primetime novelas on Univsion’s El Amor No Tiene Precio this fall.
