TV Mogul Darren Star Hopes For A ‘Runaway’ Hit

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The man behind couch potato classics like Melrose Place, Sex And The City and Beverly Hills, 90210 now hopes to have another runaway hit with Runaway.

The show debuts next Monday (Sept. 25) on the fledgling CW network, and concerns a family headed by former New Kids On The Block singer Donnie Wahlberg, who are forced to go on the run when his character is framed for murder.

Although some liken the show to a family-oriented Fugitive, Star says it’s much different, especially because his tale was inspired by a true story he heard on National Public Radio.

Plus, he adds, “We have more going on than just the search for the one-armed man.”

Insiders suspect the show’s emphasis on running from one’s past is one possible reason Star cast a one-time teen idol-turned actor in the leading role, though he doesn’t see it that way.

According to Star: “Donnie isn’t running away from his past. He won that piece but feels like he’s evolved from it and now has a great second act ahead of him. I think he was more interested in the family aspect.”
