Grade Schoolers’ Write Stories For A Barrel Of Monkeys

CHICAGO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – If you don’t think obsessive compulsive behavior can be funny, think again: it can be as silly as a barrel of monkeys.

That’s what one student writer in a creative writing program in the Chicago Public School System thinks, anyway – one of 28 silly student writers who are providing material for a local theater group to perform in the 5th annual “Celebration of Authors” at Chicago, Illinois’ Neo Futurarium theater.

The name of the performance troupe is – of course – Barrel Of Monkeys and when the members aren’t helping kids in grades 3 to 5 get their comedy ideas to the stage, they’re producing alumni who go on to write for Saturday Night Live and Chicago’s Second City.

According to Barrel Of Monkeys co-founder and artistic director Halena Kays, no subject is too silly.

Says Kays: “We’re working on a story now about a kid who can’t stop laughing and can’t stop swimming; so it’s kind of this insane story about obsessive compulsive behavior.”

The annual performance and reception takes place June 12 and is free to the public.
