Thats because a singer named Chantal Chamandy has just become the first Egyptian artist to have a top ten hit in Radio & Records with her song, You Want Me.
Chamandys song is currently in the mags Radio Y Musica chart, which is geared toward Latin and Reggaeton artists.
Going from the Middle East to North American Latinos might seem a stretch but Chamandy sees a lot of similarities, especially since Spanish music staples like flamenco guitar are influenced by Arabic culture.
In addition, she says half-Arabic artists like Shakira are bringing bellydancing to Latin music.
But Chamandy isnt stopping there. She releases her U.S. debut, Love Needs You, in July and believes Americans will take to her Arabic-tinged tunes because theyre more melodic than current U.S. pop hits.
Plus, shes willing to do whatever it takes to reach an audience, even record a dance version of the 1986 Bangles hit, Walk Like An Egyptian.
