Tom Cruise’s ‘Today Show’ Tussle Chosen Year’s Top PR Blunder

SAN FRANCISCO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Tom Cruise has won the heart of Katie Holmes, but his tussle with Matt Lauer on The Today Show has won him a more dubious honor: The worst PR blunder of the year.

That’s the word from San Francisco-based public relations executive Michael Fineman, who has been making his list of PR gaffes and checking it twice for the past 11 years.

He says that while War Of The Worlds was the biggest hit of Cruise’s career, his diatribe against post-partum depression on The Today Show may have lost him some credibility with the media and public for his beliefs outside of acting.

Other bad press boo-boos in 2005 include...

  • Pat Robertson’s suggestion that the U.S. “take out” Venezuela’s president Hugo Chavez.

  • United Auto Workers president Ron Gettelfinger’s decision to bar marine reservists from parking their cars in a UAW parking lot if they drove foreign-made cars or had pro- Bush bumper stickers.

  • Finally, the Snapple drink company gets a big PR raspberry for putting a 35,000 pound popsicle in the middle of a New York park on a hot day. When it melted, a few bicyclists injured themselves sliding through kiwi-strawberry goo.
