Nickel Creek: ‘Don’t Call Us A Country Band’

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – If you want to get the members of the up-and-coming bluegrass trio Nickel Creek red with anger, tell them they’re the only country band you like.

That gets Nickel Creek violinist Sara Watkins’ goat. She says the fact that anyone considers the group “country” is “baffling” and can’t believe people would think of the Creek as country because “we don’t think we sound like any of the commercial groups coming out of Nashville.”

Although Watkins doesn’t like being compared to contemporary country music, she does admit she has enjoyed hearing music fans tell her the band inspired them to dig deeper into country roots and pick up Hank Williams, Bill Monroe and other old school country acts.

Folks digging deeper should continue because a lot of people are digging Nickel Creek. The band just released its third album, Why Should The Fire Die?, and are on a U.S.-wide tour.
