Steve Allen Dead, But Not Forgotten

ENCINO, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – While showbiz big wigs paid tribute to the late comedian Don Adams at his wake on Wednesday (Oct. 5) night, in some ways they were paying tribute to deceased comedian Steve Allen.

Actress Jayne Meadows-Allen attended the funeral for Adams and says it was also a mini-tribute to her late husband, first host of The Tonight Show, who died October 30, 2000.

She says classic comedians like Bob Newhart and Don Rickles either told a story that involved her husband, or showed film footage of Adams that came from Allen’s TV show.

Meadows says Newhart recounted when he was just starting out as a comedy writer, he tried to sell some jokes to Adams.

However, Adams told him “I don’t buy jokes, but leave them and I’ll look them over.”

A few weeks later he saw Adams on Allen’s Tonight Show using his jokes.

Meadows is also happy over another tribute to her husband: a new book called Inventing Late Night (Prometheus) which details how Allen created the late night TV talk show format that has been copied by today’s legends David Letterman and Jay Leno.
