Poker Champ Teaching Players The Machiavelli Method

PHILADELPHIA (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A professional poker player is taking a page out of Machiavelli’s book to turn card sharks into princes.

Poker champion David Apostolico has written the book Machiavellian Poker Strategy (Lyle Stuart) to teach a ruthless approach to playing poker based on the teachings in Nicolo Machiavelli’s The Prince.

Apostolico says anything short of cheating is fair game in poker, but the point is to “keep your opponents happy, but still manipulate them.”

He says you need to imagine that you’re the prince and they’re your subjects while you put pearls of wisdom into play like: An opportunity can arise from the unawareness of the enemy, which frequently becomes obscured after a victory and gives you the occasion to attack him.

Another of Machiavelli’s adages is to “judge by results,” but as Apostolico says, don’t expect to see results right away. He says it will take several months for poker buffs playing cash games – as opposed to tournament games – to see the Machiavelli approach start to pay off.
