Thats when the 79th annual National Cherry Festival is taking place and more than 500,000 people are expected to pay homage to the tiny round fruit.
Festival spokesperson Susan Olson says there will be cherry pie-eating contests, cherry-related foods like cherry pizza, cherry barbecue sauce and cherry salsa and even a cherry-pit spitting contest where saliva-flinging participants will try to beat the festival record of 44 feet.
Olson doesnt know of any people who have gotten sick from overindulging on the fruit during past cherry lovefests, but admits its definitely possible especially since 40,000 tons of cherries will be used and consumed during the week-long celebration.
The cherry jubilee is Michigans most popular harvest festival, which isnt surprising the state exports 80 percent of the worlds production of tart cherries.
