Limp Wrists Unacceptable On National Handshake Day

JENKINTOWN, Pa. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A business etiquette expert wants to eliminate limp wrists and crushing grips for National Handshake Day – which takes place June 28.

Marjorie Brody says handshakes make an instant impression and she knows human resource directors who have disqualified a job candidate because of their wet-noodle grip.

Brody says if your handshake is too weak, people will think you’re weak. But if your grip is too strong, it makes people think, “What are you trying to do to me?”

Another handshake she says should be avoided is shaking a person’s fingers. Brody says you can’t control someone else’s handshake, but you might be able to prevent the finger grip by moving in quickly and going “web-to-web” with their hand.

She says once you grasp a person’s hand, two to three hand pumps is appropriate, although, in Europe, one is enough.

Brody says, “It’s like a kiss. You know when it’s over.”
