Marjorie Brody says handshakes make an instant impression and she knows human resource directors who have disqualified a job candidate because of their wet-noodle grip.
Brody says if your handshake is too weak, people will think youre weak. But if your grip is too strong, it makes people think, What are you trying to do to me?
Another handshake she says should be avoided is shaking a persons fingers. Brody says you cant control someone elses handshake, but you might be able to prevent the finger grip by moving in quickly and going web-to-web with their hand.
She says once you grasp a persons hand, two to three hand pumps is appropriate, although, in Europe, one is enough.
Brody says, Its like a kiss. You know when its over.
