Ralph Stanley: ‘O Father, Where Art Thou’

COBURN, Va. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Father’s Day will be a family affair for bluegrass great Ralph Stanley but he’ll be working, not celebrating.

The 78-year-old Stanley – who was a major part of the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack – is spending Sunday (Jun. 19) performing in Bean Blossom, Indiana.

But he won’t be alone. His band includes his son, Ralph Stanley II and his 12-year-old grandson, Nathan, on mandolin.

Naturally, that won’t give Stanley much time to open his presents but he figures he already got his in the form of his new CD, Shine On, which was produced by Ralph, Jr.

He says it was nice having his son handle the technical details but insists Junior didn’t boss him around in the studio.

Stanley also admits not every band has a 66-year age range like his but he’s confident that little Nathan can handle the gig because, as he puts it, “I’ve been holding the reins until he’s ready.”
