Old School Lumberjacks Are Baaaack

HAYWARD, Wis. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Age ain’t nothin’ but a number – especially in the lumberjack community.

Lumberjacks young and old are heading to Hayward, Wisconsin, this weekend (Jul. 24-26) for the 50th Annual Lumberjack World Championships.

For the event’s golden anniversary, organizers have invited champions from the last 50 years to come back and compete against the young bucks of today.

But the young’uns shouldn’t rest on their laurels thinking the elderly aren’t tough enough to swing an axe anymore.

Spokesperson Diane McNamer says the older competitors, who are in their 70s and 80s, were “huge back in the day.”

She adds, “Age and stamina plays a hand, but we have a gal here in her 50s who looks like somebody’s mother and she can beat the pants off someone in their 20s. There’s no guessing what people can do.”

Though the old folks are still considered the underdogs, McNamer says they’ll be coming with major trash talk and will do their best to back their bark with some bite.
