Crappy Neighborhoods Thrive On Canvas

SAN FRANCISCO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A dirty, sketchy neighborhood becomes a thing of artistic beauty on canvas.

Artist Kevin Peterson’s latest exhibit, Slumbody Loves You, on display now until August 1 at Varnish Fine Art Gallery in San Francisco, shows love to the crappy neighborhoods many call home.

Through his oil paintings, which feature low-income slums around America in a surreal style including neighborhoods in his own hometown of San Diego, Peterson documents the importance of community, no matter how dilapidated an area has become.

Though people see these run-down neighborhoods as an eyesore, Peterson finds beauty in the slums and believes conventional things like pretty beaches and fancy cities are painted enough by other artists.

He has a special place in his heart for crappy ’hoods and hopes his works tell the story of the various areas he painted without “shoving it down your throat.”
