Rugged Race Yields Overly Intense Runners

HONOLULU (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A run on tough terrain can really bring out the animal in someone.

The XTERRA Trail Run is a series of mini marathons, full marathons, and short runs happening throughout the year that take athletes through the roughest terrain throughout the world.

Spokesperson Emily McIlvaine says runners have to tread through dirt, mud, water, rocks, roots, and any other fall- inducing natural habitat Mother Nature wants to throw their way.

Though most take the runs in stride, McIlvaine says there are some extreme athletes who take the challenge so seriously, it’s “hilarious.”

They’ll often run the trail a few times beforehand to learn the route, spend hundreds on shoes and equipment, and chug energy gel packs, even though there’s a reboot station every few yards on the trails to help them out.

Some even go for another run right after because they don’t feel like the length – often 26 miles – is enough to quench their need for intensity.
