Whatever Floats Your Boat

BODEGA BAY, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – It’s either sink or swim this weekend (Apr. 4-5) for wannabe fishermen in Bodega Bay, California.

The 36th Annual Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival is in town, and it’ll feature an exciting event called the “Wood Boat Challenge,” where 13 teams have three hours to build a boat using only simple materials like lumber, nails, screws, duct tape, plastic, and rope.

Teams will then race their boats down the bay in hopes of having the fastest vessel.

Challenge organizer Starr Swindt says those who want to win the race should stick to building sleek, canoe-like boats, which move quickly in the water.

However, a few shipwrecks are inevitable.

Swindt says that every year, at least half of the boats sink at the very beginning of the race – no matter who’s at the helm.

She laughs, “The Coast Guard teams sunk both of their boats last year. Watching them sink was half the fun!”
