Racers Build Crappy Outhouses

CONCONULLY, Wash. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A poorly built outhouse can lead to a crappy crash.

This Saturday (Jan. 17), the 26th Annual Outhouse Races will bring teams of amateur engineers to Conconully, Washington, to race wacky, homemade outhouses down an icy path.

Spokesperson Marilyn Church says racers put a lot of thought into their souped-up crappers, but the outcome often falls flat.

She says, “Every year we see somebody’s good idea, but there is a process of elimination. One race, the rider rode backwards, but it doesn’t work for our bucket race because pushers wear buckets over their head. The rider couldn’t tell them where to go, and they ended up crashing into the side.”

One team even had the not-so-brilliant idea to build their outhouse out of corrugated cardboard, which doesn’t hold up in wet, snowy weather.

Whether their outhouse is a winner or loser, Church assures that competing in the race turns racers into local celebrities for the day.
