Dogs Trained To Sniff Nuts

FLORENCE, Texas (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Some dogs just have a nose for nuts.

The Southern Star Ranch Kennel in Florence, Texas, specializes in training “peanut detector dogs,” pooches who sniff out traces of nuts for humans with deadly allergies.

Trainer Sharon L. Perry says the peanut pups are trained to sniff for clues just like drug dogs, and remain very professional while on duty.

They never nap on the job and are always aware of their surroundings, smelling traces of nuts from a mile away.

Once they detect peanuts, the dogs use a “passive alert” – where they sit firmly without moving – to warn their allergic masters.

Perry says the dogs are trained to sniff everyone casually, in case they’re concealing peanuts on their person.

He’s never had a dog chow down on the evidence while working, so doggy peanut butter-eating accidents have been avoided.

After a while, Perry says detector dogs become beloved family pets, and the furry life-savers give Lassie a run for her money.
