Book Dedications Better Than Actual Books

SAN DIEGO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Sometimes, a few personal words are more interesting and entertaining than a whole book of them.

In her book, Once Again, To Zelda: The Stories Behind Literature’s Most Intriguing Dedications (Perigee), Marlene Wagman-Geller tells the tales of famous authors’ dedications, and their truth is often better than their fiction.

She says, “Most dedication are love stories. In writing their dedication, the writers enter this confessional, and in many instances it’s the only window into who they are. Sometimes the dedication is more gripping than the actual story.”

One of the greatest dedication stories she discovered in her research was for the novel Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand.

Hillenbrand dedicated the book to her loving boyfriend, Borden Flanagan, who stuck by her side as she struggled with paralysis and depression, and encouraged her to write the story.

Wagman-Geller says, “It’s so romantic. You just don’t find men like that anymore.”

Once Again, To Zelda hits shelves today (Nov. 4).
