Hissing Cockroaches Are Slow Creepy Crawlers

RALEIGH, N.C. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – North Carolina is totally buggin’!

BugFest 2008 is crawling into the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on Saturday (Sep. 20), and co-organizer Liz Jones hopes it will get people to love bugs.

She says, “We want to open people’s eyes to the cool side of bugs, and show them that bugs aren’t bad to have around.”

Jones is putting together many events to help spread insect appreciation, especially for their “star bugs” – the cockroaches – with the Roachingham 500 cockroach races.

Madagascar hissing cockroaches will creep to the finish line while being cheered on by the crowd, but don’t hold your breath for a speedy race.

Jones says, “They’re not very fast at all. It takes a lot of encouragement, the right temperature, and whether they’re in the mood.”

Though Jones says a good poking can help the roaches move things along, they still take a few minutes to reach the checkered flag.

Some don’t finish at all, however, and opt to rest the whole race.
