Pierogy Passion Runs Deeps In The U.S.

SCRANTON, Pa. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Here’s some food for thought: Folks all over the U.S. have passion for pierogies – potato-filled dumplings from Eastern Europe.

To celebrate America’s pierogy pride, Mrs. T’s Pierogies is holding the third annual Capital of the Pierogy Pocket contest now through September 15.

They’re looking for cities with the most pierogy passion within the “Pierogy Pocket,” which spans Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and parts of New York.

If they can prove their pierogy worth, the winning town will get $10,000 for a local charity.

Past winners have included citizens of Buffalo, New York, who changed George Michael’s song “Faith” to “Pierogies Are Great,” and Binghampton, New York, where a pierogy proclamation was issued by the mayor.

Additionally, the first-ever Sister City of pierogies will be crowned outside the pocket this year, and they’ll get a $5,000 prize.

Mrs. T’s spokesman Wayne Holben dubs pierogies the perfect food.

While the traditional way to eat them is with butter and onions, he prefers them with marinara sauce and sausage, or in stir fry with fresh veggies.
