Washboards Make Sweet Scrubbin’ Sounds

LOGAN, Ohio (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Folks in Logan, Ohio, are tappin’ their toes to the sound of washboards.

The 8th Annual Washboard Music Festival is wringing out love for old school washboards on June 13-14.

Event organizer Laura Lyon says that despite modern laundry machines taking some of their cleaning credibility, scrubbin’ on the metal melody-makers is still the way to get down and dirty on the dancefloor.

She says, “It’s amazing how popular washboards still are, not just for eco-friendly cleaning but musically too. They make a great drum-like rhythm.”

The event is sponsored by the Columbus Washboard Company, which is the only factory still churning out boards, and will have people soaking up the sounds of washboard-based jazz and cajun music.

But washboards aren’t just a one-note wonder.

Lyon says of the 16,000 sold last year, many are also used to make funky furniture and art pieces.
