On June 7, golfers will be making the hike to Socorro, New Mexico, for The Elfego Baca Golf Shoot, a single-hole competition that begins at 7,280 feet atop Socorro Peak, and ends seven miles and nearly four hours later.
According to event coordinator Russ Moore, the hazards including rattlesnakes, swarming clouds of Socorro gnats, and biting worms may have casual golfers rethinking their shooting strategy.
He says, You have to brush up on your hiking skills and endurance. Its treacherous. And you need a very good supply of bug repellent.
Moore also has another piece of geographical advice to help you reach the finish.
He says, The best strategy is to play the south side of the mountain, where the cliffs are less sheer. The chances of finding your ball are much better.
