Poison Oak Gets Folks Itching For A Good Time

COLUMBIA, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Poison oak typically sends folks running for the pharmacy – unless you’re from Columbia, California, that is.

The folks in the old gold-mining town of Columbia are hosting the 25th Annual Poison Oak Show on September 22, and residents are itching to get their hands on the pesky plants.

That’s because medals will be given to winners of events like most original poison oak dish and best poison oak jewelry, and contestants will be scratching for the wins.

According to event spokesperson Jeanne Hand, people have cooked up dishes like poison oak tacos in hopes of claiming the meal prize, but she says these prickly platters “are not for eating, but for judging.”

For the jewelry category, contestants are warned to avoid sporting poison oak earrings, though Hand says “no one’s brave enough to wear them.”

But there is one category where contact with the itchy leaves is required.

Says Hand: “Everyone wants a rash for the show so they can win the best rash category. It’s the best time to get one, and the only time rashes are fun.”
