Thats what an internet entrepreneur in Atlanta is doing in hopes of making a virtual mint.
Joe Holihan is the creator of onthemapus.com, a website that sells virtual real estate for all 40,000 U.S. zip codes for $100 apiece.
Holihan says the idea is that folks who buy up the rights to, say, the 90210 zip code belonging to Beverly Hills, California, will be able to create a web community reflecting the city, and even sell ad space.
For instance, one guy who has bought the virtual rights to Sonoma Valley, California, is attempting to sell ad space to wineries in the real Sonoma Valley.
Holihan believes his virtual real estate will become a commodity in the future and folks who buy up spots in cyber San Diego for $100 will make a profit selling it to someone else.
One virtual city that has yet to be purchased is Roswell, New Mexico, but Holihan jokes that if aliens want to buy it, Ill let them if they have a valid credit card.
