‘As The World Turns’ Celebrates 13,000th Episode

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Monday is an important anniversary for the long-running CBS soap opera As The World Turns: Its 13,000th episode.

The show first debuted on April 2, 1956, and has been running ever since – even during national tragedies.

For instance, on November 22, 1963, CBS anchor Walter Cronkite interrupted the live broadcast to announce the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

However, the actors continued their scenes and a complete uninterrupted episode still survives.

Other ATWT trivia....

  • Cast member Helen Wagner has played the role of Nancy Hughes from Day 1 and, at age 88, holds the World Record for appearing the longest amount of time on one TV show as the same character.

  • In 1988, ATWT became the first soap to feature a gay male character.

Finally, some of the actors who got their big break on ATWT include Martin Sheen, Meg Ryan, Julianne Moore and Parker Posey.
