Mo Rocca: ‘I Love Spelling’

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Humorist Mo Rocca loves cracking jokes and talking politics, but there’s one thing he enjoys even more – and that’s spelling.

Rocca – best known for his stint as a satirical correspondent on The Daily Show – is joining the cast of the Broadway musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee starting Tuesday (Apr. 17), and says the gig was right up his alley since he’s a “master speller.”

Rocca plays a vice principal who is also the “word presenter” during the spelling bee.

He speculates the hardest part of his performance will be holding his tongue while other people spell the words.

Says Rocca: “I love spelling so much, I may actually yell out the word before people have a chance to spell anything!”

Rocca considers spelling an “art form,” and absolutely hates spellcheck for “putting great spellers of the world out of business.”

And while Rocca doesn’t actually get to compete in any spelling bees in the play, he’s still thankful for the show taking him back to his childhood days.

He says, “I never got to be in a real spelling bee so this play fulfills my fantasy. One of my proudest moments in life was in 5th grade when I stood up in front of the class and spelled ‘rendezvous,’ it was such a rush!”
