Thomas Dolby Admits Composing Ringtones Harder Than Hits

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – 1980s techno-pop star Thomas Dolby hasn’t released a new album since 1992, but he’s kept up with the music biz – via ringtones.

Dolby – who is best known for his 1983 hit, “She Blinded Me With Science,” – spent much of the last 15 years developing the Beatnik software technology that is used in two-thirds of the world’s cell phones.

As such, he often composed ringtones and found it harder than writing pop ditties.

He says a good ringtone has to be practical and ear-catching “without being annoying.”

These days, Dolby is spending more time on his own compositions than on ringtones.

He will be hitting the road starting March 10 in Santa Cruz, California, in order to reintroduce his old songs to a new generation. He will release an album of new music later this year.
