Filmmaker Warns Indie Rockers: ‘Get Over It’

MONTREAL (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Although the indie rock movement is getting buzz from tastemakers, a filmmaker in Montreal warns self-proclaimed indie rockers that their myopic viewpoint may doom them to mediocrity.

Tim Rideout is the director of RAW! The Full ‘What Is INDIE’ Interview and he believes that while musicians shouldn’t sell themselves out just to become commercial, he also thinks they shouldn’t make unlistenable music just to keep their “indie cred.”

As he puts it, “Basing your music to go against the establishment is just as bad as only playing what’s popular.”

Rideout says musicians who are sucked into the indie rock credo of “if it’s making money, it can’t be indie, it can’t be cool” are hurting their own musical growth.

He’s even suggesting cooler-than-thou indie rockers should “get over themselves” and says listening to so- called sellouts like Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears is the first step.

In his words, “Can’t we take part of a mega-selling pop star’s business success, analyze it and apply it to our own microcosm?”
