Oldsters Working At Wal-Mart The Real American Heroes

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – If you want to see real American heroes, you can visit a military base – or the local Wal-Mart.

That’s according to author Mark Victor Hansen, who is the co-author of a new book, How To Make The Rest Of Your Life, The Best Of Your Life (Nelson Books).

Hansen – who is the co-creator of the Chicken Soup For The Soul series – says seniors who work at Wal-Mart and McDonalds rather than moving to retirement homes are true heroes because, as he puts it, “There are 100 million people over 50 in the U.S. If they retire in the next 20 years, this country is screwed.”

Hansen – who cowrote his book with 94-year-old Art Linkletter – says it’s important for old people to remain active and productive – “even if it’s just volunteering.”

He figures the baby boomers who worry about getting older should take heart in Paul McCartney, who is turning 64 on Sunday (Jun. 18) but, as he puts it, “is still contributing to society and seems like a happy camper, despite his divorce.”
