Starting later this month, more than 200 bears will be popping up in cities like Vancouver, Victoria and Whistler to honor the Kermode or Spirit Bear, a rare animal found in the Northwest part of British Columbia that is known for being born white and turning brown as it matures.
Each bogus bear is around 8 feet high and while some are being used as a canvas by painters, other artists are turning them into sculptures.
For instance, Spirit Bear spokesman Stephen Miller says there will be a bear that resembles Darth Vader and another will be a Bat Bear that resembles the popular comic book character.
The first bears will be installed all over B.C. in the next few weeks and will be on public display until October. After that, they will be auctioned off to benefit kids with disabilities.
