The advertiser-funded web-based business freegashelp.com launched two months ago and involves slapping magnetic ads on drivers cars for products like auto dealers and cleaning services.
Drivers who meet certain criteria can get a gas card worth anywhere from $5 to $80 a month, depending on the size of the ad they display on their car.
Not surprisingly, the companys marketing director, Mel Jacob, says many of the cars are gas-guzzling SUVs and trucks.
Jacob says the company also takes photos of the drivers and their cars and sends them to the advertisers, much like adopt-a- child programs in foreign countries.
So far, the program is limited to Orange County, Riverside and San Diego County in California, but the company is gearing up to expand into Michigan and Florida.
