Its a four-day event that starts today (Feb. 9) and will commemorate the birth of Charles Darwin, the man behind the theory of evolution.
Ithaca marketing director Bruce Stoff says the city is a perfect spot for the event since it is the location of Cornell University and Ithaca College and, therefore, has a large nerd element.
To that end, the intelligently designed festival will include evolution-oriented activities for the kids; lectures on evolution and creationism; and a showing of Inherit The Wind, a 1960 courtroom drama which debates whether Darwins theory should be taught in schools.
This year marks the first year of Darwin Days, and Stoff admits the event is a little more academic than hed like. Still, hes hopeful that as the event evolves, it will become more of a scientific version of Mardi Gras.
