Gregory Kompes, author of 50 Fabulous Gay-Friendly Places To Live (Career Press), says he was surprised to learn that Salt Lake City which has a reputation as a Mormon mecca has a very active gay scene.
Kompes says the city is still basically conservative but credits the openness towards gays, in part, to local leaders who took steps to make the city appealing to international visitors for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
But Salt Lake City isnt the only surprisingly gay- friendly city. Kompes says Sacramento, California, is just beginning to capitalize on its gay scene while Minneapolis, Minnesota, is bending over backwards to attract gays.
But the best surprise for Kompes is how many people are angry that their city isnt mentioned in the book. He says there was only one city whose residents asked not to be listed but he refuses to name it.
