First Four-Minute Mile Breaker Getting His Props

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth broke numerous records during the 20th Century, but what may be the greatest sports accomplishment of the last 100 years is Roger Bannister’s breaking of the four- minute mile.

That’s the opinion of award-winning sports journalist Frank Deford, who ranks Bannister’s achievement as the most significant athletic feat of the century.

Deford felt so strongly about Bannister’s accomplishment he wrote an article about it that appeared in a 1999 Sports Illustrated issue. Now he’s expanded on that piece and turned it into a movie called Four Minutes for which he wrote the screenplay.

The ESPN2 original movie follows Bannister’s 1954 attempt in England to set a new record for running the mile.

Deford says he tried to stay true to the real story as much as possible, but admits he had to embellish “a few things” including the characters that surrounded Bannister at the time.

All in all, Deford thinks he did a good job and figures Bannister would like the movie.

Four Minutes premieres Oct. 6.
