Pirate Pop Musician Helps Landlubbers On ‘Talk Like A Pirate Day’

PORTLAND, Ore. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Things that make you go, “Aaar”: Monday (Sep. 19) is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, a day that floats the boat of one marauding musician.

Loren Hoskins’ alter ego is Captain Bogg of the Portland music duo Captain Bogg & Salty, which performs original “poop-deck pop” music.

Hoskins has a silver tongue when it comes to pirate parlance, which he learned, appropriately enough, from Long John Silver in Treasure Island and from actor Robert Newton who played Silver in Walt Disney’s 1950 movie adaptation of the book.

Hoskins claims when people talk like a pirate they’re mimicking Newton’s performance which Hoskins calls “slightly Welsh, slightly Irish and all gravel.”

But he says if you’re caught speechless on what to say during Talk Like A Pirate Day, Hoskins says it’s easy to turn nautical phrases like “split the main brace” into pirate threats like, “I’ll split your main brace.”

He also says adding the phrases, “I will,” “says I,” and “you be” to the end of any sentence will help you sound more salty.
