Big-Boned Author Slims Down Through Novel Manner

COPALIS BEACH, Wash. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – When author Andrea Rains Waggener set out to tackle the weighty issue of being big and beautiful in her novel, she had no idea she’d shed 100 pounds herself.

But that’s what happened to Waggener along the way of writing Alternate Beauty (Bantam), which focuses on size- 28 heroine Ronnie, an aspiring fashion designer who falls asleep only to awake in a world where big is beautiful.

Waggener, now 45-years-old, tipped the scale at 275 pounds in her mid-30s when she went through a major depression.

In 1997 she started the novel, but didn’t sell it until 2002. It wasn’t until after the last rewrite, and spending time with the character Ronnie, that she could finally accept herself as “beautiful and sexy.”

That’s when she began dieting and lost 100 pounds of flab. In Waggener’s words, “I thought once you lose the weight, you’ll be okay, but I had it backwards.”

Today, Waggener doesn’t know how much she weighs because she threw away her scale, but says she is a size 10-12.
